A 36-year-old tailor who defiled a 10-year-old school drop-out was on Monday sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court.
Samuel Asare, charged with defilement, pleaded guilty.
Prosecuting, Police Inspector I.A.A. Ahor, said the victim was granddaughter of the complainant and they lived at Teshie in Accra.
He said Asare who is on good terms with the complainant, operates in front of the complainant's house.
Prosecution said on May 9, the complainant went to church and left the victim in Asare's care, to assist victim to sell the complainant's pito, a
local beverage.
He said the victim went to take her bath and while dressing up, the convict entered the room and attempted to defile her but she ran away leaving Asare in the room.
Police Inspector Ahor said the victim informed a neighbour about her ordeal but the neighbour asked her to go and dress up and come.
He said when the victim entered the room, Asare hurriedly entered and held the victim tightly, removed her pant and defiled her.
The prosecution said the complainant, on her return from church, met Asare in the act.
Prosecution said complain was lodged with the police at Teshie and Asare was arrested.
