Colonel Emmanuel Nibo, Director of Public Relations of Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), on Wednesday confirmed the death of a Ghanaian soldier on peacekeeping in Democratic Republic of Congo.
Speaking to Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra, Col. Nibo did not disclose the name of the deceased but said he was a Warrant Officer and member of the Ghana Battalion (GHANBATT 11) of the UN Mission in DR Congo.
He said official reports from DR Congo indicated that the deceased was travelling to Mbandaka airport to beef-up government forces that came under attack from ethnic insurgent.
Col. Nibo said family of the deceased was yet to be informed and the incident was being investigated by the United Nations (UN).
Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Sunday reported that a UN soldier from Ghana was killed in Democratic Republic of Congo where government forces exchanged fire with ethnic insurgents.
