Silent Valley National Park in southern Indian state Kerala has been included as one of the seven sites for serial nomination from the Western Ghats for World Heritage Site status, while Silk Road Sites spread across various states have been placed in the UNESCO's tentative list.
Lok Sabha (Lower House of Indian Parliament) was on Wednesday informed that the park, which is one of the last undisturbed tracts of South Western Ghats mountain rain forests, has been included in the Serial Nomination on Western Ghats.
Minister of State for Planning V Narayanasamy, who holds ad hoc charge of the Culture Ministry, said the government submitted a proposal on Silk Road Sites for inclusion in the
Tentative List of UNESCO and same has been accepted.
The World Heritage status to these sites can be accorded after submission of a nomination dossier by the country concerned and subject to the condition that the site should have figured for at least one year in the tentative list.
India has 27 World Heritage Sites and Shantiniketan has been nominated as India's official entry for the staus this year.
