The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRIJ) handled 654 cases in the Eastern Region involving various abuses of children in 2009 and the first quarter of this year.
The cases include denial of maintenance, custody, paternity, naming, maltreatment, defilement, force marriage, education, medical care and other child right abuses.
Mr Hubert Akrong, a principal investigator with CHRIJ, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Thursday said their yearly monitoring of complaints received on daily basis in the region, exhibited clearly that children continued to suffer abuses and atrocities against their fundamental rights.
He noted that the perpetrators of the abuse of children included parents, foster parents, security agencies, politicians, media and to a
large extent certain human rights Non Governmental Organizations (NGO).
Mr Akrong said although partnership between CHRAJ and the police had been very helpful and effective, there was the need for further
collaboration in the protection of the rights of children.
He observed that some state institutions, who were supposed to protect the rights of children, in the processes become perpetrators of abuse
against children and stressed the need for state institutions to be strengthened.
Mr Akrong called on human rights organization to increase their passion towards child's rights and freedoms by partnering with CHRAJ to form human right clubs in schools to educate children on their fundamental human rights.
