Support for Community Mobilization, Projects and Programmes (SCMPP), a non-governmental organization (NGO) based at Daboase has distributed bicycles to 189 Junior High School (JHS) pupils in 10 communities in the Mpohor Wassa East District.
The communities are Kwaboa, Adase, Ewiauaso, Accra New Town, Ayim, Adaa, Mampong, Mamponso, Kakabo and Obrayebono.
Speaking at the separate ceremonies in the communities Mr. Agyabah Buah, Executive Director of SCMPP, said the bicycles were donated by Cadbury Canada Limited to assist the pupils who walk between four to nine kilometres everyday to attend school.
He said the donation was part of the strategy to promote education and eliminate worse forms of child labour in cocoa growing areas.
Mr. Buah said the elimination of worse forms of child labour in the cocoa sector which is dubbed "Yendaakyi Project" is an initiative of the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI) based in Geneva.
He said the SCMPP is implementing the project in collaboration with another Daboase based NGO, Help Advance Community Opportunity Goals (HACOG) and with technical support from Participatory Development Associates (PDA)
based in Kumasi.
Mr. Buah appealed to parents and guardians and the communities to ensure that the beneficiary pupils use the bicycles to enable them attend school regularly.
