The Tema Regional Police Command has appealed to the public to volunteer information that would lead to the arrest of five of the 13 pirates who raided a Chinese vessel.
Six of the pirates have already been arrested while two, Tettey Weckley, believed to be the leader, and Ankrah Commey, drowned when they attempted to escape arrest.
Chief Inspector Olivia Turkson, Tema Regional Police Public Relations Officer, named those arrested as Joseph Korletey, 20, Richard Quartey, 21, Samuel Ansah, 25, Joseph Okine, 21, Ishmael Ashitey, 25, and Richard Kabutey, 22.
She told the GNA that the six were arraigned last Friday and had been remanded into prison custody to re-appear on April 22.
She said on March 29 one Zhang and Xivkaz, Offshore Managers of New Gulf Fishing Company in Tema, together with four other Chinese, called at the Fishing Harbour Police Station with wounds on their heads.
They reported that while on board 'MV Akuya 1', a fishing vessel at the anchorage at the fishing harbour, 13 young men on board a canoe with the inscription 'Amazing Grace' attacked them with knives and cutlasses and inflicted wounds on them.
The pirates made away with 5,000 dollars, a welding machine valued at 700 dollars, a wrist watch, four mobile phones and other personal effects.
She said the Naval Patrol Team arrested the six suspects on the high seas at on March 30.
Chief Inspector Turkson said police investigations revealed that on March 23, 26 sailors made up of 18 Ghanaians and eight Chinese on board the fishing vessel under the captainship of Lui Yongheng berthed at the anchorage after a fishing expedition.
Soon after berthing, the 18 Ghanaians disembarked leaving the eight Chinese with 1,900 cartons of fish awaiting clearance from the Port authorities.
