Mrs Salome Francois, Executive Director and Founder of the New Horizon Special School in Accra, has said that every child whether normal or handicapped should develop to the highest of their capabilities.
She said disability was not inability and asked parents who had children with intellectually disabilities and autism to send them to school.
Mrs. Francois was speaking at a "Day of fun games", organised by the school, over the weekend in Accra.
She said the fun games were organised by the school every year to give the special children the opportunity to enjoy sporting activities like their counterparts in regular schools and also to set high standards and encourage maximum efforts in all other activities.
"The day is not just to entertain students and their families and friends, but also to show the general public the abilities of special
children in our society," she said.
Mrs. Francois said during the exercise, winning was not necessarily the objective, but co-operation, discipline, and the joy of participating was what mattered most to the children.
"The children are happy just to be part of the games, like the special Olympic, they keep on saying, let me win, but if I cannot win let me be
brave at the attempt" she said.
She urged parents to encourage their children to take up active roles in society.
Mrs. Francois thanked all the organisations and institutions, which have been sponsoring the games over the years and urged other bodies to
support the school in future.
