Consumer Protection Agency (CPA), a non-governmental organisation, is appealing to owners of commercial vehicles to repair the speedometers on their vehicles to check speeding, which is a major cause of accidents on the roads.
It said in a letter to the Executive Secretary of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) that this followed research it had carried out,
which indicated that almost 80 per cent of commercial vehicles that plied the Accra-Tema motorway had faulty speedometers.
It said its research conducted at the 37 Military Hospital, Kwame Nkrumah Circle and Achimota stations, using 30 vehicles from each station, showed that 75 of them did not have speedometers that were working, 10 were not functioning properly while only five were functioning well.
CPA said this defect on the vehicles did not make them obey the 100 km per hour speed limit on the motorway.
It said it found that 96 per cent of accidents on the motorway was due to speeding.
CPA said it also found that drivers deliberately removed the speedometer cables of their vehicles so that they were not checked by passengers for speeding.
It appealed to the NRSC to compel owners of these vehicles to repair them or be prosecuted.
The NRSC should also repair traffic lights, street lights and road signs to ensure safety on the roads.
