Handicrafts made by Jordanian women behind bars were on display on Monday at the opening of a three- day exhibition held in the Jordanian capital of Amman.
The exhibition, organized by the country's Public Security Department and the Culture Ministry, showcases handicrafts, embroideries, drawings, jewelry, made by over 50 inmates at Jordan 's Women's Correctional and Rehabilitation Center, located to the south of the capital Amman.
"On display are pieces of cloths with very vivid colors and decorations, which reflect a desire to start a new fresh life," sergeant
Sawsam Ibrahim, head of the embroideries section of the center, told Xinhua.
She said that inmates at the center are provided with vocational training on the manufacturing of handicrafts and other items in cooperation with Jordan's Vocational Training Corporation.
"We provide the inmates with training to help them fill their time positively and to teach them new skills that they can utilize and start a
business when they are released. The whole idea is to rehabilitate them and help them integrate into the community," Ibrahim added.
Ibrahim said the inmates receive salaries along with the training that is offered at the center, adding that the revenues generated from the sold items are channeled to the police to offer better training services to the prisoners.
"The inmates are like any other people who have talents and objectives in their life. We seek to unleash their potentials and help them become productive members in the community," Ibrahim added.
