A couple residing at Ashaiman Valco Flats has appealed to the Tema Regional Office of the Domestic Violence Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service to prosecute a 19-year-old boy who allegedly sexually assaulted their six-year-old girl.
The couple told the Ghana News Agency on Monday that even though a medical report from the Tema General Hospital had confirmed that the assault occurred, the Ashaiman branch of DOVVSU was delaying in arraigning the perpetrator before court.
The mother of the victim, who is a shop attendant, said in the morning of January 18, 2013 the victim started crying in pain when she attempted washing her private when giving her her bath.
When questioned, the victim led the mother to Charles Kweku, the landlord's son, as the one who allegedly defiled her.
The mother said she sent the victim to the New Crystal Hospital where it was confirmed that she has been sexually assaulted.
She reported the incident to the Ashaiman DOVVSU and a medical form was issued to them for examination at the Tema General Hospital.
A copy of the medical report from the hospital which was signed by Dr Ephraim Osei-Nkrumah stated in part that "the hymen was torn/perforated in both lateral walls. The HIV test was positive/reactive".
The couple added that even though Kweku was arrested, he had been released on the bases that he is an epileptic patient.
They added that the landlord had threatened to evict them from his land if they pursued the case adding that they had become a laughing stock in the vicinity and the house.
She said due to the mocking, they had withdrawn the victim from her school and he is now residing with a relative at Afariwa.
When contacted, the detective in-charge of the case who only gave his name as Vincent promised to arraign the perpetrator before court next week.
