The chiefs and people of New Town near Half Assini on the Ghana-Cote d' Ivoire border have commended the government for providing electricity and constructing a road linking them with Half Assini.
They said the provision of the two facilities has relieved them of their major plight and pledged their continued support to the government.
Mr Joseph Asmah, a spokesman for the people, made the commendation in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at New Town.
He said with the construction and provision of the road and electricity, socio-economic activities have started picking up to improve their living condition.
Mr Asmah said prior to the construction of the road, the people in the community used to depend on the high and low tide of the sea before they could reach Half Assini to attend hospital or transact business with the banks and other important institutions.
He said women in labour also had to be carried by people for the twenty-five kilometer journey to Half Assini or wait for the low tide of the sea, a situation that resulted in the deaths of some pregnant women.
Mr Asmah said presently even though the road is not tarred, movement of the people has become better adding that there are vehicles readily available for Kumasi, Accra, Takoradi and other parts of the country.
He said with the provision of the two facilities many in the town have now established small-scale businesses and other economic ventures.
Mr Asmah said with the provision of the facilities, it was equally necessary to extend them to New Town Wharf, which is only about three kilometers away to ensure easy movement of goods and passengers
