World Vision Ghana (WVG), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has established Information Communication Technology (ICT) Centre for students, at Tongo in the Talensi-Nabdam District of the Upper East Region.
The facility which was built by the Talensi Area Development Programme (ADP) of WVG is equipped with computers and accessories and linked to an internet facility.
Inaugurating the project on Wednesday, Mr Edward Awuunure, District Chief Executive (DCE) commended the WVG for the facility and noted that the contribution of the NGO to the construction of health and educational facilities had been enormous in the District
"Other NGOs must emulate WVG as its programmes have impacted positively on the livelihood of the people, particularly the vulnerable like women and children. Boreholes, institutional latrines, provision of micro finance, Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) among others things have been provided to the communities by WVG," he said.
Mr Faara Joachim, District Director of Education, said the establishment of the ICT centre by WVG marked a milestone in the history of the Directorate.
He noted that it would enhance teaching and learning among school children particularly the Basic Education Certificate Examination candidates and Senior High School students who are made to write ICT as an examinable subject.
Mr Joachim said research had proved that students who patronised ICT had been able to improve upon their studies especially their reading and numeracy skills.
Ms Bennedicta Pealore, Operations Based Team Leader of WVG said the NGO is child focused and had therefore implemented a lot of programmes that had improved upon the health and educational status of children.
She said the establishment of the ICT centre in the Talensi District was the third in the Region apart from the two facilities in the Bongo District.
Mr Norbert Akolbila, Talensi ADP Manager of WVG, said his outfit would ensure that the Ghana Education Service and the National Service Secretariat run the centre to benefit students in the District.
He said workers in District particularly teachers who want to learn ICT would be given the opportunity to do so.
