Ghana’s music community is in mourning following the passing of legendary gospel musician Yaw Sarpong on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.

His departure marks the end of a remarkable journey and the loss of one of the most influential voices in the country’s gospel music history.

For nearly five decades, Yaw Sarpong stood as a towering figure in Ghana’s gospel music space. With his unmistakable voice and deeply spiritual delivery, he gifted the nation timeless songs such as Wo Haw Ne Sen, Awurade Kasa and Tie Obiaa.

 These songs did more than entertain; they ministered, comforted and inspired generations of listeners.

As leader of the Asomafo Band, Yaw Sarpong built a body of work that left an indelible mark on Ghana’s gospel music landscape.

 His influence cut across age, class and denomination, shaping the sound and direction of gospel music for decades.

In recognition of his immense contribution, he was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards, which was received on his behalf by his longtime colleague, Maame Tiwaa.

Yet, Yaw Sarpong’s impact went far beyond the songs he recorded. He paved the way for future generations of gospel artistes, setting standards of excellence, discipline and purpose. His passing has also reignited important conversations about the broader challenges within Ghana’s music industry, particularly the welfare of ageing musicians.

Many artistes face serious health and financial difficulties in their later years, often with limited support.
