A new Godzilla movie is in the works from Toho Studios, with the studio taking to social media to announce the mysterious project. While details remain under wraps at present, it is revealed that the new Godzilla outing will be helmed by director Takashi Yamazaki, who is best known for Always: Sunset on Third Street and the more recent offerings Stand by Me Doraemon 2 and Dragon Quest: Your Story. As well as revealing the director, the post also reveals that the Godzilla movie will be released on November 3, 2023. Alongside the caption, a mysterious teaser image is also revealed. An image that Godzilla fans will no doubt be able to garner some meaning from.
The untitled Godzilla movie will be the 37th installment in the Godzilla franchise and the 30th live-action Toho Godzilla project. The last we saw of the legendary monster from Toho Studios was in 2016’s Shin Godzilla, which finds politicians and society struggling to deal with a mysterious monster emerging from Tokyo Bay and wreaking havoc upon Japan. Shin Godzilla received critical acclaim in Japan, but was met with a more mixed response from Western critics. The project found huge success at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing Japanese-produced Godzilla movie in the franchise and was showered with nominations and awards.
Godzilla Will Return in the MonsterVerse
Godzilla will not only return courtesy of Toho Studios, but the beast will also be back for more wanton destruction in the MonsterVerse. Godzilla will do battle once again with King Kong in Godzilla vs. Kong 2, and details regarding the project have slowly started to come through. Godzilla vs. Kong 2 is all set to be led by Legion and Beauty and the Beast star Dan Stevens, who will reunite with The Guest director Adam Wingard.
"This latest entry follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own,” the official outline for Godzilla vs. Kong 2 reads. “The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever."
The franchise will also expand onto the small screen, with father-son duo Kurt and Wyatt Russell due to lead a series for Apple TV+. Titled Godzilla and the Titans, the series will pick up “following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the series explores one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.” Created by Chris Black and Matt Fraction, Godzilla and the Titans will star Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Joe Tippett, Elisa Lasowski, Mari Yamamoto, and Anders Holm alongside the Kurt and Wyatt Russell.
Godzilla vs. Kong 2 is scheduled to be released on March 15, 2024.
