Mr. Kusi Boakye-Yiadom, the Chief Executive Officer of GESRO Credit Union, said though poverty is high in several communities and in many families, individuals who determine to overcome it, could become successful.
He said the many traditional practices and beliefs had reinforced and strengthened poverty but Ghanaians could use Information Communication Technology (ICT), credit unions, the internet, savings and other thrift organizations to break free from perpetual poverty.
Mr. Boakye-Yiadom said these at a day's seminar organized by the Christian Executive Business Network in Takoradi.
"Our over-reliance on foreign goods and products has also contributed to our poverty status and we must all work towards reversing such taste."
He said many people spend large sums of money on foreign goods and services to the detriment of investing for the future.
Mr. Boakye-Yiadom said although the British took away a lot of natural resources, the country could still overcome the poverty ideology among its people if they are counselled on alternatives to poverty eradication.
He said it is the task of development practitioners to encourage people to believe in themselves, overcome their poverty and make significant contributions towards national development.
"This will not happen naturally if the development practitioners have a fatalistic world of poverty" he said.
