Wenchi Municipal Secretariat of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in collaboration with Ghana Education Service (GES), has established a co-operative credit union to support teachers in the municipality.
The Wenchi Municipal GES Workers Co-operative Society and Development was established with the aim of making funds accessible to teachers to help ease their financial problems.
Mr Joseph Ankomah, Municipal GNAT Secretary, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency in Wenchi on Friday, said measures had been taken to ensure the success of the programme.
He said an executive board, which was yet to be inaugurated, had been set up to manage the affairs of the union.
The GNAT Secretary noted that as at 2007 the academic performance of students in Junior High Schools in the municipality was unsatisfactory, which he attributed to the failure of teachers to attend school regularly.
"As a result we came out with this measure to serve as a morale booster to the teachers to help raise the academic performance of the students," he said.
He noted that lack of parental commitment to the education of their wards and ineffective collaboration with the educational authorities was a key challenge confronting the standard of education in the municipality.
Mr Ankomah appealed to parents, teachers, heads of schools, traditional authorities and other stakeholders to ensure effective collaboration to promote quality education in the area.
