The National Investment Bank (NIB) has been directed by the government to provide financial support to traders affected by the Kantamanto Market fire, in a bid to help them sustain and rebuild their businesses.
This announcement comes as the market fully reopens, months after a devastating blaze destroyed more than 7,000 shops and disrupted the livelihoods of over 30,000 traders.
Speaking at the reopening ceremony in Accra, Deputy Chief of Staff, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo underscored the crucial role the market plays to the country’s economy and the livelihoods it provides to the traders.
“This market is more than a place of trade. It is the lifeline of thousands of Ghanaian families, the beating heart of trade, business, and commerce in Accra. Today, we salute you for your resilience. We salute you for refusing to be defeated after the January 2nd fire and for choosing to rebuild Kantamanto keeping the hope of 30,000 traders alive. The reopening of Kantamanto Market marks the beginning of a stronger, safer chapter for all who depend on it. His Excellency John Dramani Mahama and all of us personally pledge our support,” she said.
Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the Kantamanto ‘Obroniwawu’ Businesses Association, Adutwum Atta Manu, expressed appreciation to The Or Foundation, a non-profit organization, for its role in supporting the market’s comeback.
He noted that the Foundation has already provided 1,000 fire extinguishers to enhance safety.
