Ghana Women in Agroecology and Territorial Markets (GWAT) has pledged its commitment to promoting ecological farming, women agribusinesses, create jobs and ensure sufficient, safe and nutritious food throughout the country.
The group with a membership of about 100 seeks to make agroecology a known name in Ghana, educate more Ghanaians, especially women, to understand and accept agroecology.
Agroecology is a sustainable farming that works with nature. A key principle of agroecology is the diversification of the farming system through practices such as mixed cropping, intercropping, agroforestry and livestock rearing, according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation.
The group, as part of strengthening its base and operations, has put in place a four-member interim leadership to steer the affairs of GWAT for the next six months before a main election is done.
The leadership include Mrs Emefa Ansong Mensah, CEO of Emefs True Coco Foods and President of GWAT; Madam Gifty Moore Arthur, CEO of Bibie Moore Enterprise and Vice President; Madam Naomi Kokuro, CEO of Kaya App Grocery and Programmes Coordinator and Miss Mercy Owusu, CEO of Ananse Farms and Treasurer.
Mrs Emefa Ansong Mensah, CEO of Emefs True Coco Foods and Interim President, GWAT, said the education and sensitisation on agroecology would start from the farmers to the end-users of the product.
Speaking at a forum where several key issues were discussed on the growth and sustainability of agroecology and the membership, she said the practice of agroecology had become the solution to the problems, from climate change to health.
"Are we better off with our current agric systems or not. With agroecology, we have products that are safe, that do not destroy the soil and put good money into our pockets to sustain our families. Agroecology has come to stay," the CEO said.
She said the leadership had a primary mandate of bringing women within the agriculture value chain onto the GWAT platform to help create meaningful lives for businesses and the society.
The Ghana Women in Agroecology and Territorial Markets (GWAT) has been the brainchild of Guzakusa, an organisation dedicated to promoting women-led agribusinesses and supported by Alliance for Foods Sovereignty in Africa (AFASA).
Fortune Kyei, Project Lead, Guzakusa, urged the leadership to structure a vibrant association that could be registered at the Office of the Registrar of Companies to help position themselves to access funding.
"The GWAT platform will be championing agroecology. We are expecting that the interim leadership will put together a good constitution that will effectively make our association a trailblazer," she said.
