Adwinsa Publications on Friday donated supplementary readers worth GH¢45,000 to the Ghana Library Authority (GLA) to mark the International Day of Education.
The donation forms part of efforts to promote reading among children across the country.
The 35 titles, written by indigenous Ghanaian authors, will be distributed to libraries nationwide to enhance access to locally relevant stories for children.
The Managing Director of Adwinsa Publications, Evelyn Amponsah, emphasised the need to cultivate a reading culture among children.
She urged parents to develop the habit of taking their children to libraries, as it plays a crucial role in their development.
“Books are essential to children’s education, but the high cost of books, driven by expensive imported printing materials, makes them less accessible,” she said.
She called on the government to reduce taxes on printing materials and properly resource the Ghana Library Authority to ensure books remain affordable and libraries are well-equipped.
The Head of Acquisition and Distribution at the GLA, James K. Naabah, expressed gratitude to Adwinsa Publications for the timely support.
“As a library, we are mandated by law to establish and organise activities for the benefit of the country. Adwinsa has been our long-time partner, and we appreciate them for helping us carry out our mandate.”
“We will ensure the books are distributed to the 137 libraries we currently have,” he assured.
Mr Naabah then encouraged Ghanaians not to abandon libraries due to internet access, underscoring the continued relevance of books in education.
Moreover, he commended Adwinsa Publications, for being a long-standing stakeholder in education, and also a consistent supporter of literacy in Ghana and beyond.
This latest donation, he said, further reinforces their commitment to improving literacy and fostering a love for reading among Ghanaian children.
