As part of efforts to mark the month of October as Cybersecurity Awareness Month, MTN Ghana has met with some stakeholders at the Osu Presbyterian Church Hall in Accra.
The aim of the meeting was to educate customers, internal stakeholders, and staff on cybersecurity awareness as well as follow up on their engagement with students from Osu Presbyterian Secondary School after an initial session in February 2023. Attendees were taken through hygienic cybersecurity practices such as reporting bullying, shortening screen time, and keeping personal information private.
Ms. Jacqueline Hanson Kotei, Senior Manager, Enterprise Information Security and Governance at MTN Ghana, who spoke to the media, said there was a need to promote social media hygiene in an era where digitization was far advanced.
She emphasised the need for young people to employ hygienic cybersecurity practices at an early age, especially when using digital tools such as smartphones, laptops, and others.
She noted that MTN Ghana was collaborating with the National Cybersecurity Authority with their education campaigns in order to have a nationwide impact.
Ms. Kotei urged all and sundry to take the Cybersecurity Awareness Month education campaigns seriously in order to be safe online.
She called on Ghanaians to also practice safety online and avoid using birth dates as passwords, using simple passwords, or writing them down as they could be easily accessed by anyone.
The annual event also entailed a debate among students on cybersecurity on the theme “Social media platforms should implement stricter security and privacy controls because users are incapable of protecting themselves online”.
