Seven farming communities near Coaltar in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region have appealed to the Department of Feeder Roads and the District Assembly to re-gravel the road network in the area.
The communities complained that about 22 feeder roads in the area are in a deplorable state, making travelling a big challenge.
The communities are Abiesikrom, Obowunsu, Tomkrom, Awereso, Bada, Mamakrom and Akotuakrom.
Briefing the Ghana News Agency after a meeting held by the farmers at Abiesikrom, Nana Abiesi Kumi II, Chief of Abiesikrom said the rehabilitation of the roads in the area would help the communities to easily transport their farm produce to the marketing centres.
Nana Kumi said because of the deplorable roads in the communities, the farmers had no choice than to carry their foodstuffs, including cocoa, to Marfokrom, about seven kilometers away, before transporting their produce to the marketing centers.
Nana Kumi said the rehabilitation of the roads would also enable the communities to send their patients to nearby clinics and hospital on time.
He said after a snake bites in the area, the victims are carried on shoulders for seven kilometres to reach a clinic at Marfokrom, adding that, students also walk long distances to get to school.
