4-H Ghana, a youth leadership focused group, which aims at training young people to be positive contributors to national development, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Food and Postharvest Technology Department of the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology of the Koforidua Technical University (KTU) at Koforidua.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Executive Director of 4-H Ghana, Mr Appiah Kweke Boateng, explained that the purpose of the MOU was to provide opportunities for students and faculty members of the University to participate in the programmes of 4-H Ghana to train the future farmers of the country through the 4-H model of learning through practice.
He said the relationship would help the students of the University to be attached to 4-H Ghana projects to acquire practical experience.
Mr Boateng said the relationship would enable 4-H Ghana to link the students and faculty members of the University to the partners and affiliates of 4-H Ghana locally and international.
He said currently 4-H Ghana has 42,500 young members across six regions of the country and affiliated to the Global 4-H Network made up of 4-H organizations in 50 countries across the world.
Mr Boateng said 4-H clubs in communities and in schools in Ghana were engaged in livelihood skills such as enterprise gardening, animal husbandary , art and craft and public speaking.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Smile Gavua Dzisi, said among the aims of the University were to produce well grounded career oriented graduates who would make a strong impact on their communities and the country.
She expressed the hope that the relationship between the University and 4-H Ghana and other affiliates of the University would afford the graduates of the Food and the Postharvest Department to acquire the practical experience to impact positively on the agricultural value chain and contribute positively to the Planting for Food and Jobs programme of the government.
Prof. Dzisi called for the establishment of a joint committee of representatives of the University and 4-H Ghana to come out with an implementation plan and timeline for the implementation of the MOU.
