Mr. Carlos Ahenkorah, Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, on Thursday said one ingredient needed for the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is philanthropy.
He said the Ministry was well aware of the immense role that philanthropy played towards achieving these goals. The Deputy Minister was speaking at the Launch of the Enabling Environment for Philanthropy report in Accra.
He said it was important to create an enabling environment for organisations involved in philanthropic work, because these organisations brought in the needed inputs which in the long term culminated in the nation’s growth.
Mr. Ahenkorah said he was of the hope that the report would yield the necessary inputs from stake-holders, towards the creation of a complimentary environment towards philanthropic work.
Madam Gita Welch, UNDP Country Director, said the launch served the crucial role of encouraging more structured forms of philanthropy, for maximised contribution towards achieving the SGDs.
She said the launch would help with the framing of policy dialogue, necessary to improve upon the philanthropy sector much better. Madam Gita said to achieve the SDGs, funding was highly required, which made philanthropic work an ideal ingredient in the quest.
Madam Anatu Ben-Lawal, a Co-Author of the report said the formation of an independent philanthropic net-work institution was highly recommended for more effective philanthropic work.
Madam Ben-Lawal, presenting the report, said developing an award scheme for philanthropic organisations, would also go a long way to boost the activities and aims of the organisations. Madam Heather Grady, Vice President, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, said achieving the SGDs required in-depth understanding and planning.
She said there was the need to think outside the box to sustain the goals.
The programme was an initiative by the SDG Philanthropy Platform, UNDP, a global and national facilitator that helps optimise resources and efforts to achieve the SDGs.
