The Melcom Group of Companies has intensified its strive to boost trade, industry, commerce and job creation in the country through its retail outlets, by commissioning its 38th retail shopping centre at Achimota, Accra.
The Achimota Melcom is a four-storey reinforced concrete structure with a single level basement parking lot. The building also has a concrete rooftop with parapet walls purposely designed to serve as a roof top patio.
Mr Bhagwan Khubchandani, the Chairman, Melcom Group, thanked Ghanaians for patronising Melcom since its establishment. He said he was hopeful that with the opening of the new branch, the patronage would further increase.
“My family has been in Ghana for 88 years and I would like to thank Ghanaians for the hospitality that we have received and very good friends we have made over the years.
“I am the second generation, we have two managing directors that are the third generation and we have also joined hands with our grandchildren who have joined the business, and that is our fourth generation,” he said.
“Ghana has been our adopted home, and we are very grateful to the Ghanaian public for the hospitality we have received,” he added.Mr Robert Ahomka-Lindsey, Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, said government had a very clear strategy on job creation; and that, the way to get this done was through industrial transformation.
He called for the promotion of Made-In-Ghana goods, which according to him, would go a long way to create more jobs for the Ghanaian youth. He said there was the need to update the physical structure of our retail trade; so that the shopping environment people visit would be more appealing as compared to the traditional markets.
“One of our key areas of intervention to support is the domestic retail trade, that is, making the shopping environment in the country more nourishing, fulfilling and enjoyable for the Ghanaian shopper,” he said.
“We are happy that Melcom has opened another branch, because it goes a long way to continually improve the environment of which people can shop,” he added. Mr Ahomka-Lindsey encouraged all potential and existing entrepreneurs to improve the environment within which they trade.
He advised that in a bid to encourage the production of Made-In-Ghana goods, we must have more outlets to sell. Mr Godwin Avenorgbo, the Director of Communications, Melcom Group, said the Achimota Melcom edifice had set new standards for ensuring a safe and secure environment for all their business premises.
“While we aim at satisfying our customers’ desire for convenience and variety, safety and security have become even more paramount in our overall attitude for doing business in Ghana,” he said.
“We have already made public a summary of all observations with regard to quality control during the construction phase of the structural framework,” he stated.
