Small scale exporters have been urged to adhere to international product safety standards to enhance their product quality and attain competitiveness on the global market.Mr Alhassan Baba Yunus, a Senior Project Officer, National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI), said this during the 38th meeting of the Upper West Regional Shipper Committee (UWRSC) held in Wa.
The lecture which was on the topic: “Managing Quality to Gain Competitive Advantage”, was aimed at sensitising small scale exporters on the need to pay particular attention to product quality so that they could become competitive at the international market.Mr Yunus said the competitive quality of a product at the international market was determined by three variables including quality, price and product availability, noting that the quality of the product was the most important of all.
He called on small scale exporters to acquaint themselves with ISO 22000 which highlights on food safety needs to serve a guide them in the production of quality goods that would be competitive in the global market.Mr Yunus said quality products would not only increase competitiveness in the global market but would also increase more market opportunities for their producers.
He said there is the need for businesses to have quality management plans and systems in place in order to achieve quality production.He said this should include the training of staff, motivate and provide logistics to enable them produce to meet standards.
