Mercedes-Benz passenger car sales in Malaysia surged significantly by 28.2 percent to 5,003 units, a record high, in 2010 from 3,903 units a year ago.
This was also the first time the sales of the premium cars surpassed the 5,000 unit mark in Malaysia.
Peter Honegg, president and chief executive officer of Mercedes- Benz Malaysia (MBM), told a media briefing in Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday that the company had retained its leading position in the premium car segment in 2010.
This was due to the improved economic climate in 2010, and the introduction of new models into the market, explained Honegg.
MBM had delivered close to 7,000 vehicles, including commercial vehicles, in Malaysia last year.
Honegg added that the company had also achieved over 50 percent market share of the luxury car segment in the country, beating its competitors like Audi and BMW.
Honegg also said MBM had made significant inroads in its truck segment.
