A group of Senior Citizens in the Dormaa Municipality last Thursday appealed to the government to take steps to make locally produced items affordable to consumers.
The group said if this was done then the clarion call on Ghanaians to patronize "made in Ghana goods" could achieve a meaningful response.
The senior citizens made the call when the Municipal Assembly feted them in commemoration of the Senior Citizens Day.
They deplored the high cost of items produced in Ghana as compared to imported ones blaming it partially on the high cost of raw materials and
desire of the Ghanaian manufacturer and trader to make huge profit over a relatively short period.
They implored the government to provide adequate financial and logistical support to manufacturing companies to enable them to produce at a reasonable and affordable cost to meet "the pockets of the masses".
The senior citizens appealed to the youth to drop the negative aspects of their adopted western culture to make the administration by traditional
authorities in their communities easier and effective.
Mr Vincent Oppong Asamoah, Municipal Chief Executive commended them for their contribution to nation building over the years.
He said the government's free enrolment of the aged into the National Health Insurance Scheme was part of its appreciation of their hard work and
assured them of policies that would make their life more meaningful.
Mr Asamoah called on them not to hesitate in placing their rich and varied experiences at the assembly's disposal for accelerated development.
