Industrialist Mukesh Ambani on Wednesday hosted South African President Jacob Zuma, amid reports that Anil Ambai group has revived talks for a possible merger deal with African telecom giant MTN.
"Met the P0resident of S.Africa Mr Zuma last nite (sic).
Mukesh bhai, Nita, Naresh Goyal and his Nita (Mrs Goyal) had arranged a lovely function at Taj," actor Shahrukh Khan tweeted Thursday afternoon.
Khan is considered close to Mukesh Ambani's family.
Zuma is leading a strong business delegation and his Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davis had Wednesday said: "We have business people keen on MTN and as long as they comply with regulatory approval it is fine."
In 2008, Anil Ambani group's telecom flagship Reliance Communications had entered into talks with MTN for a proposed merger, but the deal was aborted after Mukesh Ambani's group staked claim to first right of refusal for RCom's stake.
The brothers, who parted ways in 2005, last month called a truce by scrapping a non-compete agreement. The day after the truce was announced MTN shares jumped six per cent.
Wednesday, RCom said: "The company has been receiving various proposals from time to time from reputed international telecom companies expressing interest in acquiring a strategic equity stake in RCom."
RCom shares have surged over 14 per cent in two days.
