The African Development Bank’s Asia External Representation Office (PEXT) and its African Natural Resources Management and Investment Centre (ECNR) will jointly organize a second policy dialogue as part of the A New Vision for Africa series. The virtual event – titled Enhancing Cooperation between Africa and Asia in Developing Green Minerals Value Chains – to be held on 17 October, 2023, will explore the role of green minerals in the energy transition, and opportunities for cooperation between Africa and Asia to develop green minerals value chains in Africa. The webinar will enable knowledge sharing, and the exchange of lessons learned to enhance cooperation in developing green minerals value chains and establishing relevant supply chains in Africa.
Developing green minerals industries and value chains in Africa could yield major economic benefits. The continent holds abundant reserves of copper, lithium, graphite, rare earth and other minerals that play a vital role in the production of renewable energy technologies like solar panels, wind turbines, electric vehicles (EVs) and battery storage.
The African Development Bank’s African Economic Outlook 2023 emphasizes that Africa’s massive natural capital assets, including green minerals, could be leveraged to finance climate action and green growth transitions. The Bank Group is leading strategic efforts with the African Union, for regional cooperation on green minerals to drive Africa’s industrial development and economic growth.
The webinar will be held primarily in English, with simultaneous interpretation services available in French.
The inaugural policy dialogue, focusing on the Asia-Africa Cooperation on Natural Gas, took place in May 2023.
