I am delighted to share that Euromonitor will present at the 7th Agrofood & plastprintpack West Africa 2022 taking place in Accra's Trade Center Arena. The 2022 exhibition will be supplemented by a 2-day program full of presentations and conferences from November 29th till 1st of December, organised jointly by fairtrade and AHK Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Ghana. The event will feature our very own Business Development Consultant, Kendra Stoffberg. Kendra will present a session discussing "Trade Development in Agriculture trends and opportunities", she will focus on the agriculture sector in Africa key themes shaping the industry and trends impacting the industry. Key highlights from the presentation: • While fresh food is the most purchased food type across all income groups in Sub-Saharan Africa, packaged food is the largest fast-moving consumer goods industry in terms of value of sales in the region, with a recorded retail value growth of over 20% last year. • The influx of low-cost smartphones and increased data affordability in the region is expected to support the spread of the mobile app culture and provide growth opportunities for digitalisation across industries. • African consumers are also becoming increasingly aware of health claims and sustainable supply chains, especially in the wake of Covid-19. More and more they are doing their own research into types of ingredients included, types of packaging used and where products come from. • In many African markets agrifood staples like grains, fibres, spices, certain vegetables and teas are being hailed as super foods for their various nutrient and health benefit properties. According to Business Development Consultant, Kendra Stoffberg, "In South Africa, modern retailing is the dominate channel accounting for almost 60% of total retail value. While in Nigeria traditional retailing is the dominant channel. A channel that is often underestimated though, and shouldn't be, because it has one of the widest distribution across the continent, is informal retailing. Although lower-income groups tend to dominate the informal retail space, there is a prevalent misconception that informal markets are exclusively for low-income consumers. But actually, many middle-income Africans also frequent informal markets, especially in spaces where modern retail options are fewer. So this channel is also a good way to reach a large base of diverse consumers".
