Sc. Entry Requirements

A good first degree (2nd  class lower division) in relevant security, humanitarian and health related field with at least three (3) years of working experience in a security, humanitarian sector or other health related field. Holders of first degrees in disciplines which are closely related to security, humanitarian intervention, such as laboratory sciences, allied health sciences, geology, marine engineering, ecology, environmental studies, chemistry, biology, etymology, botany, health and medicine including degree in demography, statistics, economics, planning, international relations, migration, insurance, administration and anthropology, education and communication will also be considered.

All candidates should have a background or interest in criminology or disaster risk reduction.  

Duration & Mode (s) of Delivery

The course will be full time for a period of 12 months.

Other modes of delivery such as Distance and Sandwich courses will be considered in the near future which will run for a period of 24 months.

The duration of the regular programme is 2 semesters or 12 months for the full time.

For the other programs, 4 semesters or 24 months for the Distance and Sandwich program. Each semester would attract not less than 15 credit hours and not more than 21 credit hours of course load. 

Students will spend up to one (1) month in the field working in their respective areas of concentration under the supervision of District and Regional Security Council, other services or professions in related fields in the civil defence field.

The field attachment offers students the opportunity to apply the knowledge learned in the classroom and to acquire the competencies needed to be able to transition from school to the professional working space. They will also undertake research of relevance to the district or sector or industry where they are interning or doing attachment.

Where the student is already employed in a security or disaster risk reduction agency, the student will return to his or her place of employment during the period of the attachment but would also carry out research specific to the agency’s needs. Such research during the period of attachment would result in the production of a long essay of not less than 8,000 words and not more than 10,000 words to be assessed at the Department level.

Continuous assessment during each semester will take the form of students’ reports, class participation, written assignments, assessments of field work through supervisors’ evaluation and log book. The final examination consists of the assessment of the long essay coming out of the internship.
