Celebrating 25 Years of Open Technology Standards
25 Years of Making Standards Work … Together
In October 2021, The Open Group commemorates its 25th anniversary ~ acknowledging and reminiscing on remarkable achievements in the technology standards arena!
A quarter century of innovation, expertise, collaboration, networking, and connection!
Can you believe what was happening in 1996?
- More email than postal mail was sent
- The first commercial USB port and cable were distributed
- IBM computer Deep Blue beat chess master Garry Kasparov
- Ask.com was created
- Google was introduced
- Internet Explorer was launched by Microsoft
- A domestic sheep by the name of Dolly was born, and became the first mammal to be cloned
- The first Tomb Raider video game was released
That is a lot of game changing, earth shattering, culture evolving advances in the world!
And did you know The Open Group has been an integral part of the many technology developments throughout the past 25 years?
Established as X/Open and then merging with Open Software Foundation in 1996, The Open Group, currently with over 850 Member organizations in over 50 countries, leads the field in technology standards services, certifications, research, and training.
Notably, The Open Group is the certifying body for the UNIX® trademark, and publishes the Single UNIX Specification technical standard, which extends the POSIX™ standards. If you’ve ever used a smartphone, lost track of time browsing through website after website, or played a video game on a Next-Gen console, you have used the UNIX operating system or one of its derivatives.
UNIX systems have even been used in the International Space Station to run essential equipment.
The Open Group also developed and manages the TOGAF® standard, which is the key industry standard for Enterprise Architecture. TOGAF certification has been achieved by over 110,000+ certifications in 155 countries!
Other standards produced by The Open Group include: Open Agile Architecture™ (O-AA) Standard, ArchiMate® Modeling Language, O-PAS™ Standard, FACE™ Technical Standard, IT4IT™ Reference Architecture, SOSA™ Technical Standard, and Open FAIR™ security standards.
