Network of Women in Growth (NEWIG) Ghana
About NEWIG NEWIG was founded on 8th January 2002 as a skills development and gender employment, non -government, non-profit organization working in peri-urban and rural communities in Ghana to provide opportunity to women to develop their potentials and contribute to the development of their communities. NEWIG provides vocational and entrepreneurial training, specialist advice and help to a wide range of clients in the area of small scale enterprise development.
The two additional thematic areas the NGO works on are women’s political participation and women’s human rights. NEWIG began to operate on a full time basis in April, 2004, after being registered at the Registrar-General’s Department on 22nd April, 2004.
It was issued with a certificate, numbered G-12,117 as well as a Certificate of Incorporation. Additionally, it registered with Department of Social Welfare to operate as an NGO and was issued with a certificate numbered DSW./2408. NEWIG has created autonomous spaces for strengthening the voice and organizing power of women.
Within this space, particular groups of women have been able to organize around specific issues, including economic wellbeing. The organization has strengthened women to organize as activists, thereby expanding grassroots organizing as well as enabled women, especially young ones to forge new alliances with each other. The organization uses strategies like political consciousness raising, capacity building, skills training, and communications to achieve its goals.
NEWIG is one of Ghana’s lead NGOs in delivering entrepreneurial capacity building programs. We are contracted on regular bases to run entrepreneurial trainings for international and bigger local NGOs’ clients.
NEWIG’s strength lies in providing hands on structured and practical skills training with mentorship and practical support to its beneficiaries.
