Officials from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, U.S.A. are visiting Sunyani with the hope of establishing a Friendship City relationship between the two cities in the future.
Tuscaloosa City Councilman Robert Lundell and Tuscaloosa Sister Cities Commission Executive Director Lisa Keyes, joined by Tuscaloosa residents - Dr. Seth Appiah-Opoku, Geography Professor at the University of Alabama, and Ekua Mensah Ulzen, Independent Music teacher and African Heritage Consultant in the USA, who assisted in coordinating the visit, arrived in Sunyani on Tuesday, June 16th. On Wednesday, June 17th the delegation was welcomed by Municipal Chief Executive Kwame Oppong Ababio and other members of the Sunyani Municipal Assembly, as well as the Paramount Chief of the Sunyani, Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri II, and business and education leaders in Sunyani and Techiman.
Tuscaloosa and Sunyani representatives have discussed the possibility of establishing such a Friendship City relationship over the past two years. Following very warm and productive discussions they have agreed to open a dialogue between the two cities, manifesting a desire to enter into cultural, educational and artistic exchanges, and to develop economic opportunities between their business communities.
Tuscaloosa currently has successful Sister City partnerships with Narashino, Japan and Schorndorf, Germany. Cultural and educational exchanges for both students and adults are an ongoing feature of these partnerships.
Officials expressed the hope that in the future a Friendship City relationship between Tuscaloosa and Sunyani would foster friendship between the two countries, mutual respect and understanding, opening new avenues of cooperation that would be beneficial to both communities.
