The Upper East Deputy Regional Minister, Mrs. Lucy Awuni at the weekend, reiterated the need for all Ghanaians to use the occasion marking the centenary birthday of the late Dr Kwame Nkrumah, to champion the cause of unity and togetherness.
She said Ghanaians should use the occasion to achieve a common goal of uniting to fight poverty and spur the growth of the region's economy.
Mrs Awuni said this during the hosting of the "One Ghana Unity Flag", as part of the commemoration of the 100th birthday of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, held in Bolgatanga, Upper East Region.
She appealed to Ghanaians to put aside partisan politics and work together in concerted efforts to portray to the World that, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who was voted as the African Man of the Millennium, indeed truly deserved it.
She pointed out that the legacy of Dr Nkrumah was beyond measure since he did not only fight for Ghana's independence, but for the total liberation of the African Continent, as well as being one of the greatest Pan-Africanist.
"Dr Nkrumah also contributed towards the recognition of the dignity and respect for the black race, which surpasses every human imagination", and that the Unity Flag Ceremony should rekindle in Ghanaians the sense of patriotism and unity towards the political and socio-economic development of the nation.
She noted that the event was being organized to resuscitate in the citizens the legacy left behind by Dr Nkrumah and to also reawaken his virtues of freedom, unity, determination, high sense of commitment and above all, sense of self reliance and integrity.
She assured the National Planning Committee of the Centenary Celebration of the unflinching support of the Regional Coordinating Council to ensure a successful celebration of the epoch-making event.
She also appealed to the Chiefs and people in the region to extend their support to the RCC in its bid to contribute towards the successful implementation of the event.
Mr Anastas Anderson, leader of the team which brought in the One Ghana Unity Flag to the region, stressed the need for all Ghanaians to view the celebration as very important and take into cognizance, the role Dr Nkrumah played to the advancement of the Country.
The One Ghana Unity Flag, which took off in the Upper West and Upper East Regions is expected to get to Tamale on Monday and would pass through the length and breadth of the country, before finally ending up at the nation's capital in Accra on 21st September this year.
