Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Monday called for tough sanctions from the international community on Iran to stop its nuclear program.
Meeting with European Union (EU) foreign ministers in Luxembourg, Lieberman said Iran is "the biggest threat" in the Middle East and the "biggest factor of instability."
"The Iranian nuclear program can take us to a really crazy nuclear arms race in all our region. I even don't want to think what can happen in this case. The international community must stop the Iranian nuclear program with tough sanctions," Lieberman told reporters.
Lieberman said Iran is even more dangerous than the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, which has just conducted a nuclear test.
The EU, however, is reluctant to impose sanctions on Iran. "It remains a priority for the EU that Iran engages with the concerns of the world community, above all on the issue of Iran's nuclear program," said the EU ministers in a statement.
The ministers said the EU is willing to engage with Iran. But they urged Tehran "to recognize and act urgently on its responsibilities and obligations."
The EU foreign ministers expressed concern over violence and the use of force against peaceful demonstrators in Iran following the presidential elections.
"It is essential that the aspirations of the Iranian people are achieved through peaceful means and that freedom of expression is respected," said the ministers in their statement.
They asked the Iranian authorities to investigate the alleged irregularities in the presidential elections.
