There was a remote possibility for Cuba's return to the Organization of American States (OAS), from which it was expelled in 1962 due to U.S. pressure, Cuban ambassador to Peru Luis Delfin said on Monday.
Cuban former Leader Fidel Castro said that Cuba will not return to the OAS because it is linked to "despicable" and "regrettable" acts in Latin American history, Delfin said in an interview for Radio Programas del Peru, adding that Cuba's expulsion was "illegal".
Delfin said he was not against organizations like the OAS, but there should be different ones representing the interests of Latin America, such as the Group of Rio, which is formed by Latin American countries including Cuba.
The U.S. trade embargo against Cuba has had great impact on the country's economy and health of its people, Delfin said.
Cuba is recognized as a medical power, but it is affected due to the embargo policies, which do not allow Cuba buy products made in the U.S. or other countries with U.S. license, he added.
In the fifth Summit of the Americas held in Trinidad and Tobago last week, Latin American countries called for the reinstatement of Cuba's membership in the OAS and an end to the 47-year U.S. embargo against Cuba.
