A Hamas delegation will visit Cairo on Sunday for talks with Egyptian mediators to secure a ceasefire in Gaza Strip, a Foreign Ministry Spokesman said on Thursday.
"The talks will tackle means by which to cement the ceasefire with Israel and reopen all crossings," Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hossam Zaki was quoted by the state MENA news agency as saying.
"This is part of the Egyptian effort exerted to implement the Egyptian initiative on Gaza," he added.
Egypt invited on Sunday Israel and Hamas to hold separate meetings in Cairo on Thursday on means of consolidating a ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave.
However, an Egyptian senior official explained Wednesday that the indirect talks was deferred for more consultations between Egypt, the Palestinian factions and Israeli side towards an acceptable vision on stabilizing the ceasefire.
Earlier on Thursday, Amos Gilad, head of the Diplomatic- Security Bureau of Israeli Defence Ministry, had arrived in Cairo to discuss with the Egyptian mediators on the fragile Gaza ceasefire.
During his lightning visit to Egypt, according to Israeli daily Ha'aretz, Gilad might raise the issue of kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit during his talks with Egyptian officials.
Shalit was abducted by Hamas-led militants in a cross-border raid in June 2006. Hamas demands Israel pardon more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners from its jails in exchange for Shalit's release.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert declared Sunday a unilateral ceasefire in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, after a 22-day war which claimed more than 1,300 lives.
Hamas and other Gazan militant groups later echoed that they would stage a one-week ceasefire with Israel, leaving room for further negotiations under the auspices of Egypt.
