Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Seniora expressed hopes on Friday that the Arab delegation headed by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to the United Nations could succeed in reaching a ceasefire in Gaza, local Naharnet website reported.
Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat announced that President Abbas left on Friday with other Arab leaders for UN Security Council to get a binding resolution stopping Israeli offensive into the Gaza Strip.
Israel has been carrying out unprecedented and intensive air strikes on the Gaza Strip since Saturday, leaving 432 people killed and some 2200 wounded, and destroying Hamas buildings, houses and mosques.
Seniora told reporters that he hoped what was going on in Gaza should be a lesson, that "we should all be united against Israel."
"As soon as the Palestinians are united, we can convince the Muslims and the world about our cause," he said.
Seniora said "the Palestinian cause is the cause of all the Arabs, but each has a different point of view in approaching it."
Lebanese President Michel Suleiman and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri have been calling for an urgent Arab summit to pressure for a solution to the Gaza tragedy.
The Prime Minister, who is a Western ally, has not been pushing in this direction, but has adopted a stand in support of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
