The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Tuesday condemned the coup attempt by some military officers in Guinea in late Monday.
"ECOWAS has heard with dismay the news of the coup d'Etat in Guinea and condemns the unconstitutional seizure of power," a statement reaching here said on Tuesday.
According to the statement, ECOWAS calls upon the military to allow for a constitutional transition of power following the death of Guinean President Lansana Conte.
"ECOWAS will continue to work with the government of Guinea for the restoration of constitutional rule and the consolidation of democracy," it said.
In the meantime, the President of ECOWAS Commission, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, expressed his deep and sincere condolences to the family of President Lansana Conte, the Guinean government and the people of Guinea.
According to local media reports, a group of Guinean army officers announced to suspend the constitution and dissolved the government after the death of President Lansana Conte on Tuesday. But the coup attempt was challenged by Guinean government officials and parliament members as the situation has not been clear by now.
