The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has taken note of the editorial published on Graphic Online titled "Save Ghana Football from Individual Personal Interests."

We welcome constructive criticism and recognise the indispensable role of the media in promoting accountability and stimulating informed debate on matters affecting Ghana football. 

However, when commentary is founded on factual inaccuracies and broad assertions that are unsupported by evidence, it becomes necessary to set the record straight in the interest of fairness, balance and factual public discourse.

To begin with, it is important to correct a fundamental factual inaccuracy contained in the article published on Graphic Online.

The publication states that the Black Starlets lost to Niger in their quest to qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup. That is incorrect. 

Ghana exited the competition after a 2-2 draw with Uganda before losing on penalties. Indeed, the Black Starlets had finished the group stage tied on points in second place, with the deadlock separated only by the lottery of a ballot, in accordance with the competition regulations. 

It was this outcome that led to Ghana contesting the playoff against Uganda. While this may appear to be a minor factual error, accuracy remains the cornerstone of credible journalism and meaningful public discourse.

When the foundational facts are wrong, the conclusions drawn from them inevitably become difficult to sustain.

The editorial goes on to conclude that Ghana's junior national teams are in alarming decline. While the GFA shares the disappointment of supporters over the recent performance of the Black Satellites at the WAFU Championship, it is neither fair nor accurate to assess the state of Ghana's entire youth football ecosystem on the basis of isolated results.

The facts present a far more balanced picture.

The Black Satellites won the WAFU B U-20 Championship in Benin in 2020 before becoming African champions by winning the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Mauritania in 2021.

That triumph also secured Ghana qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, a tournament that was unfortunately cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

There is every reason to believe Ghana would have mounted a formidable challenge on the global stage had that tournament been played.

The Black Satellites subsequently won the gold medal at the African Games in 2023 and finished runners-up at the 2024 WAFU Championship to qualify for the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, where they exited gallantly at the quarter-final stage.

While their most recent WAFU campaign rightly fell below expectations, one disappointing tournament cannot reasonably erase years of sustained achievement.

The same is true of Ghana's female youth teams. The Black Maidens have once again qualified for the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, while the Black Princesses continue to feature consistently at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.

At the grassroots level, Ghana's U-15 Girls have won the CAF African Schools Football Championship on two consecutive occasions, demonstrating the strength of the country's emerging talent pipeline.

These achievements are not accidental. They are the product of deliberate planning, sustained investment and a long-term vision for football development.

Since 2019, the GFA has implemented one of the most comprehensive grassroots football development programmes in the country's history.

Today, the Colts Football Programme comprises *859 registered Colts clubs* operating across all football regions, providing structured football for boys and girls through clearly defined age categories and creating a seamless pathway from community football to elite academies and eventually the national teams. 

Recognising that player development is a continuous process rather than an event, the GFA has significantly expanded Ghana's national team pathway.

Beyond the traditional competitive national teams, the Black Starlets (U-17) and the Black Satellites (U-20), the Association has established developmental national teams at the U-15, U-16, U-18 and U-19 levels to widen the talent pool, monitor player progression and ensure that promising young footballers are not lost within the system before reaching the competitive age categories. 

This structured pathway enables technical teams to identify, monitor and develop players over a longer period while strengthening succession planning for Ghana's future national teams. 

That pathway is reinforced by a nationwide talent identification programme involving regional scouts, district football structures, technical staff, football festivals and school programmes specifically designed to identify talented players between the ages of 10 and 15 before introducing them into structured development programmes and the GFA's Elite Football Academies. 

The Association has equally expanded competitive opportunities through the introduction of the Elite U-15 Boys Championship, the Elite U-15 Girls Regional League, which is currently being played across all ten Football Administrative Regions, the Elite U-17 Girls Championship, the KGL U-17 National Championship* and, most recently, the MTN Elite U-19 Championship.

These competitions have significantly broadened the talent identification net and provided structured opportunities for young players to develop within highly competitive environments. 

To strengthen this player development pathway, the GFA has established three Elite Football Academies in Bolgatanga, Kumasi and Accra, providing elite coaching, academic support and high-performance training for some of Ghana's most promising young footballers. 

These academies represent the first phase of an ambitious national vision to establish an Elite Football Academy in each of Ghana's ten Football Administrative Regions, ensuring equitable access to elite player development across the country. 

These reforms have been backed by significant financial investment. Over the past two seasons alone, the GFA has invested US$200,000 in the procurement and free distribution of footballs for Colts football, with a further US$100,000 earmarked for the upcoming season.

More than 600 Colts coaches have also benefited from free CAF Licence D coaching courses, with a target of training 900 coaches nationwide, further strengthening technical standards at the grassroots. 

Another innovation that has attracted widespread acclaim across the football community is the "Catch Them Young" Refereeing Programme, which is creating a sustainable pathway for identifying, training and mentoring young referees from the grassroots into the professional game.

It reflects the GFA's conviction that the long-term development of Ghana football requires equal investment in players, coaches, referees and administrators.  

The editorial further repeats allegations that player selection into the national teams is influenced by personal interests, club affiliations or financial inducement.

These are serious allegations that question the integrity of coaches, technical staff and the Ghana Football Association. Such assertions should be supported by credible and verifiable evidence, not anecdotal references or hearsay.

The GFA wishes to reiterate that national team selection is a rigorous technical exercise. During the recent U-17 selection process led by Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum, scouts were deployed across all football regions, recommendations were received from regional football structures and technical observers, and the coaching staff travelled extensively to assess players before finalising the squad. 

Similarly, Coach Maxwell Konadu and his technical team undertook comprehensive nationwide scouting and months of residential camping in preparing the Black Satellites.

These exercises demand substantial financial, logistical and human resources. They are undertaken with one overriding objective—to identify and prepare the best available talent to represent Ghana.

Football is, by its very nature, cyclical. Every football nation experiences periods of success and disappointment.

The Ghana Football Association does not claim perfection, nor does it suggest that there is no room for improvement.

On the contrary, continuous evaluation and refinement remain central to our development philosophy.

Indeed, our own strategic framework recognises that sustained investment in infrastructure, coaching, talent identification, governance and player development remains essential to maintaining long-term success. 

What we respectfully challenge, however, is the attempt to reduce years of investment, measurable progress and carefully constructed development systems into a narrative driven by allegations of "personal interests" without presenting incontrovertible evidence.

Such conclusions do little to advance the game or contribute meaningfully to the important conversations that Ghana football deserves.

The Ghana Football Association remains unwavering in its commitment to transparency, meritocracy, accountability and continuous improvement. We welcome robust scrutiny and informed debate because they contribute to the growth of our game.

However, such scrutiny must be grounded in verified facts and objective evidence rather than conjecture or anecdote.

Ghana football deserves a national conversation that acknowledges both the challenges we face and the substantial progress that continues to be made in building the next generation of Ghanaian footballers.

The future of our game is too important to be shaped by inaccurate reporting or unsupported assertions.

It deserves to be informed by facts, fairness and a shared commitment to the continued development of football in Ghana.
