Aspiring President of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation (GABF), Alhaji Dauda Fuseni, has promised to completely rebrand the sport and overhaul the federation’s operations if elected.
The current vice-president, who is contesting for the top job in the upcoming GABF election, said the current image of Ghanaian amateur boxing was driving away potential corporate partners and media interest.
He pledged during a campaign meeting with coaches. He expressed deep concern about the shabby appearance of the national team, the Black Bombers, at the recent IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships in Dubai, where boxers and officials travelled without proper uniforms.
“How can we attract serious corporate sponsorship when our national team looks like and dresses like they are going to a funeral?” Alhaji Fuseni asked rhetorically.
“Appearance matters. When the team looks sharp, professional and united in branded kits, companies and media houses will take us seriously.”
He revealed that the federation already had a memorandum of understanding with local sportswear manufacturer BoxUp, which has committed to supplying the Black Bombers with full-range equipment, including gloves, boots, headgear, shorts, trunks, mouthpieces, bandages, punching bags and custom travelling bags. Yet, the current administration has failed to utilise the partnership effectively.
Fuseni’s running mates – incumbent Treasurer Mustapha Nettey and Second Vice-President Solomon Otoo – also addressed the gathering, promising an open-door policy and full transparency if they are elected.
Mustapha Nettey, who served as the team's spokesperson, accused the current Bernard Quartey-led administration of running a closed, non-transparent regime that has shut out stakeholders and killed motivation among boxers and coaches.
“We have the talent to win medals at every major tournament, but the motivation is zero because the doors of opportunity are locked,” Nettey said. “Under our leadership, every door – for boxers, coaches, officials and even the media – will be wide open.”
The Fuseni’s team has proposed Nii Adama Addy, popularly known as Nii Gonti Adjor 1, owner of The Gym and former manager of ex-IBF bantamweight champion Joseph Agbeko, as First Vice-President.
With elections scheduled for early 2026, the Fuseni-Nettey-Otoo ticket is positioning itself as the reformist option determined to restore pride, professionalism and commercial appeal to Ghana’s once-proud amateur boxing programme.
