Young Ghanaian goalkeeper Ernest Mohammed says he is ready to don the national colours after an outstanding season in the Kenyan Premier League with Nairobi United.
The 19-year-old, who has been eligible for selection to Ghana’s U23 side, the Black Meteors, has been in exceptional form, keeping an impressive 10 clean sheets in 18 league appearances.
The former Living Dreams Academy product has built a reputation as one of the most consistent young goalkeepers on the continent. His performances last season not only earned him four Man of the Match awards in the league but also saw him dominate the Cup competition, where he managed four clean sheets in six matches and was named Man of the Match three times. His heroics between the posts helped Nairobi United win the Cup and qualify for the 2025/2026 CAF Confederation Cup, with Ernest being crowned the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Reflecting on his journey, Ernest said he is prepared for the next step — representing Ghana at the international level. “I’m ready to wear the national colours and give everything for Ghana,” he said confidently. “It’s every young player’s dream, and I believe my performances show I’m prepared for that stage.”
With his mix of agility, composure, and command in goal, Ernest represents the kind of talent Ghana’s technical handlers are looking to build around. His growth abroad has equipped him with valuable experience that could bolster the Meteors’ campaign as the team rebuilds under newly appointed head coach Desmond Ofei.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) recently confirmed Ofei, a former Black Satellites coach and current Black Stars assistant, as the new head coach of the national U23 side. He replaces Kassim Mingle, who now leads the Black Galaxies. Ofei will be assisted by Yaw Preko and Baba Nuhu Malam, with former Asante Kotoko and Medeama SC goalkeeper Montari Tagoe serving as the Goalkeepers’ Coach.
The reconstituted Meteors technical team, which also includes Team Manager Atta Yeboah and Video Analyst Eli Vorgbe, is tasked with rejuvenating the side ahead of future assignments. Ghana has not qualified for the Olympic Games since 2004, and the GFA says the new setup is expected to “provide the necessary support to elevate the Black Meteors’ performance.”
With his current form and growing confidence, Ernest Mohammed appears poised to be part of that revival, offering Ghana a reliable option between the posts as the Meteors aim for Olympic qualification.
