Across the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A, the game to watch this weekend is definitely Arsenal v Manchester United on Sunday following the massive win in Paris over PSG in the UEFA Champions League. DStv and GOtv will be your home for the best action from the top flights of England, Italy and Spain.
The meeting of the Gunners and the Red Devils has long been regarded as one of the great rivalries in the English game, and while neither club is at the peak of their powers, their clash at the Emirates Stadium is set to have huge ramifications for their top-four ambitions.
United’s fantastic run of domestic form under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continued this past weekend when they beat Southampton 3-2 in a thriller at Old Trafford, lifting them into fourth place at the expense of Arsenal, who put up a strong showing in holding North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 at Wembley.
One of Solskjaer’s best wins in his tenure thus far came at the Emirates earlier this year when his side defeated Arsenal 3-1 in an FA Cup clash. Repeating the feat will be no easy task, especially with the Red Devils’ spate of injuries, but they will fancy their chances of overrunning the Gunners again.
In Italy, the title race is all but over after Juventus defeated Napoli this past weekend, leaving the focus on the battle for the UEFA Champions League berths. The interest for DStv and GOtv viewers will fall on the results for Milan, Inter and the capital duo of Lazio and Roma (with the former claiming an emphatic 3-0 win over the latter in their derby clash this past weekend).
Milan are to third on the log and will fancy their chances of remaining in the position when they play away to bottom-of-the-log Chievo at Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi in Verona on Saturday night. Their rivals Inter have dropped to fourth after a surprise loss to Cagliari and will need to rediscover winning form when they host SPAL on Sunday at the San Siro.
Fifth-placed Roma have allowed Lazio (who also hold a game in hand) to close to within three points in sixth and the Giallorossi cannot afford anything other than a win when they host Empoli at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday night, while Lazio face a tough trip to Florence to face Fiorentina in a concurrent clash at Stadio Artemio Franchi.
In Spain, Barcelona took a major step toward successfully defending their championship last weekend when they edged Real Madrid 1-0 at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. They face a considerably easier task (on paper at least) when they host Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, but Ernesto Valverde’s team have often taken the foot off the pedal in so-called ‘easy’ games this season.
Atletico Madrid will hope the relegation-threatened Rayo can spring a surprise at the Camp Nou, with that match following their own at home to Leganes earlier in the day. The Rojiblancos are seven points off Barcelona heading into the weekend, but it will only take one swing of three points to revive real interest in the title chase.
