The battle between the home team LA Sparks and the visiting Chicago Sky was one of epic proportions with a blockbuster finish to cap it off.
Stefanie Dolson drained a 3-pointer with only 13 seconds left left in the game to give her team the lead. She was instrumental in the Sky claiming victory as she scored 15 points. The Sky beat the Sparks 82-80 on Thursday night. That was the Sparks’ first home loss of the season.
The Sparks had looked like they were on course for another home win with reining MVP Nneka Ogwumike showcasing all of her skill in scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the contest. She beat the buzzer on a put back early in the game and looked locked in. Los Angeles now see their record sitting at 14-6 while the Sky improved to 8-13 before the All-Star Break.
The tense finish came from some dogged determination from Chicago who wouldn’t let up on chasing victory. After a timeout with 20.4 seconds left, Courtney Vandersloot curled around the defense, drove the baseline and found an open Dolson in the corner for a 3-pointer.
Nneka Ogwumike dribbled into a double team in the lane and her shot was blocked out-of-bounds by Imani Boyette with 4.8 seconds left. Boyette blocked another shot under the basket, and Ogwumike’s putback was short at the buzzer.
Vandersloot had her fourth double-double in six games with 14 points and a career-high 14 assists for Chicago (8-13). Cappie Pondexter scored eight points to reach 6,500 for her career.
Pondexter made a jumper with 7:24 left in the fourth quarter to give Chicago its first lead, 67-65, since 9-8.
