The United Nations is ready to help the Tunisian people achieve a "genuine participatory democracy," the U.N. secretary general said on Tuesday.
Speaking at a press conference at the government palace in Tunis, U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon said that the United Nations will help Tunisia in its electoral process, in the drafting of its new constitution and in the promotion of human rights and gender equality, the official news agency TAP reported.
Ban Ki-moon said that he was in Tunis "to listen and share the aspirations and challenges of Tunisians" and described his talks with the country's interim president, prime minister and foreign affairs minister as "constructive".
The U.N. secretary general flew to Tunis on Monday evening from Cairo where he met with Egyptian officials.
