The allocation of GH¢ 2.9 billion in this year’s budget for the health and education sectors reaffirms government’s commitment to offer quality life to the Ghanaian youth, Mr. Mark Owen Woyongo, Upper East Regional Minister, said at the weekend
He said education was one of the veritable vehicles on which the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government would deliver its Better Ghana Agenda.
Mr Woyongo said this when he joined the people of the Sekoti Traditional area to celebrate the annual” Tenglebre” festival, an occasion to thank God for a good harvest, health and renewal of relationships.
He said Government appreciated the problems of the deprived areas which was why thirty dams would be rehabilitated this year to improve agricultural productivity and food security in the region.
The Minister deplored the increase in the incidence of bush fire.
” I have realized that some of the bushes are already burnt and I wish to remind all and sundry about the destructive effects of bush burning” he said.
He said a fire brigade would be set up in the near future to help control activities that lead to such destruction saying an award system would be instituted to give prizes to deserving communities.
Naba Sigri Bewong, Paramount Chief of Sekoti, thanked the government and the Catholic Relief Service (CRS) for providing water for the health centre and appealed to the District Assembly for an accommodation facility to house health personnel posted there.
He also appealed to the assembly to look into the plight of the Kongo Senior Secondary School which lacked basic infrastructure.
He commended Government for instituting the Savanna Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) which aimed at bridging the development gap between the north and the south and appealed that current and successive governments should allow the programme to roll without political manipulation.
