Mr. Kofi Ohene Sakyi, National Coordinator for the University Students Association of Ghana, has advised politicians not to politicize the District Assembly concept.
He said it was unfortunate that the concept, conceived and established to enhance the Decentralisation system, was gradually losing its impact and merit.
"It is very sad to note that some political parties have started sponsoring some of their party members to contest the District Assembly elections", he alleged.
Mr. Sakyi said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Nkoranza after he declared his intention to contest the "A-Line" electoral seat in the impending District Assembly elections.
"If assembly members should be elected on party grounds, the District Assemblies may not get the required intellectuals and expertise to represent the electorate and initiate programmes that would lead to the development of the communities", Mr. Sakyi stated.
He said he aimed at using the knowledge and experience he has acquired to serve the people of the area.
Mr. Sakyi said even though Assembly members served as the linkage between the electorate and the Assemblies, it was their responsibilities to meet their people, share views with them and carry their grievances for attention.
He noted with regret that some Assembly members have refused to perform such responsibilities and was upon such conviction that he had decided to contest the election and mediate to help alleviate the plight of the people.
"I would also use my knowledge and experience in assisting the District Assembly to write project proposals so that Non-governmental organisations and Philanthropists come and support development programmes in the district", Mr. Sakyi added.
Mr. Sakyi urged the people to vote for him for the rapid development of the area.
