Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, a former First Lady and President of the 31st December Women’s Movement on Saturday left Accra for the United States to attend the Clinton Global Initiative Annual meeting.
It is scheduled to take place in New York from September 20 to September 23.
A statement from the Office of the former First Lady, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, in Accra, on Sunday, said her participation was at the invitation of Mr Bill Clinton, a former President of the United States.
The invitation is in recognition of her sterling role in women’s empowerment in Ghana, said the statement.
The 2010 edition of the Clinton Global Initiative, which was ranked in January, this year, as the number one conference for Chief Executive Officers, the statement said, would focus on empowering girls and women, strengthening market-based solutions, enhancing access to modern technology and harnessing human potential.
It said Nana Konadu, who is also Vice-Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, would contribute to sub topics, such as, “Education; Empowering Girls and Women; and The Key to Women’s Economic Empowerment and Girls: From Education to Economic Empowermentâ€.
Others topics are, “Harnessing Human Potential, Democratising Education: The Key to Global Economic Growth, Enhancing Access to Modern Technology, Democracy and Voice: Technology for Citizen Empowerment and Human Rights as well as Wiring Communities for Education and Developmentâ€.
It said the former First Lady would also take part in a special session dubbed, “Meeting of the Minds†to be telecast on CNBC on the topic: “The Future of the Global Economy: Investing in Human Capitalâ€.
The statement said, “Her programme climaxes with her participation in the Clinton Global Citizen Awards, which was established in 2007, to recognize extraordinary individuals who have demonstrated visionary leadership in solving pressing global challengesâ€.
It said, “through their work, these citizens have proven that diverse sectors of society including philanthropic, public service, corporate, and civic organizations, can work together successfully to implement and devise solutions that effect positive, lasting social change.â€
It said the former First Lady would return home on September 26.
