Supreme Court ruling on Kpandai rerun a win for justice

The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has described the Supreme Court’s decision to halt all activities related to the proposed Kpandai parliamentary rerun as a victory for justice and the rule of law.

Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom after the apex court directed the Electoral Commission (EC) to suspend preparations for the rerun pending the final determination of a case before it on Tuesday, December 16, Mr Mohammed said the ruling was firmly grounded in law and affirmed the party’s confidence in Ghana’s judicial system.

According to him, the NPP went to court fully convinced that it was presenting factual issues and trusted the legal process to deliver a fair outcome.

He acknowledged that the party, like others, may have reservations about certain past rulings, judgments, and conduct within the judiciary, but maintained that there was no doubt the court would avoid any miscarriage of justice in this instance.

“Today’s ruling is a decision for justice. It is well grounded in law. We went to court knowing very well that we were stating the facts, and we believe in the court system,” he said, adding that the outcome serves the broader interest of Ghana’s justice system.

Mr Mohammed stressed that the ruling demonstrated that Ghana, rather than any single political party, was the ultimate beneficiary of the court’s intervention.

“So we were very much pretty sure that there won’t be any miscarriage of justice. For the interest of the justice system in Ghana we are happy and Ghana is the victor in this particular circumstances,” he added.

The Supreme Court’s decision effectively pauses all actions by the EC concerning the Kpandai rerun until the legal issues surrounding the matter are conclusively resolved. The NPP has welcomed the directive, saying it reinforces adherence to due process.
